WHO ARE WE? In its tenth year at CUA, the Vis Team is selected annually to participate in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, the preeminent international arbitration competition in the world.
WHAT DO WE DO? Beginning in October with the writing process and culminating with the General Rounds in late March, the Vis Moot centers around a fictional problem involving a complex international commercial dispute. The requirements of the Vis Moot are rigorous; over the course of the competition, Vis Team members are required to collaborate in the preparation of two 35-page memoranda, on behalf of the Claimant and the Respondent, as well as train to advocate successfully before mock tribunals comprised of experts and practitioners in the field.
WHY THE VIS? The CUA Vis Team has enjoyed great success in the Moot over the years, including honorable mentions for its memoranda, and individual and team recognition for performances in the oral rounds in Vienna and Hong Kong. More important than the accolades, generations of Vis alumni attest to the Vis Team's impact on their personal and professional development. Here are just a few testimonials from alumni, in their own words:
· From a Class of 2013 graduate, “I don’t think I would have worked as hard, or learned as much, if I had participated in any of the local moots … the Vis provides an incomparable opportunity for CUA Law to market itself domestically and internationally.”
· From a Class of 2009 graduate, “The partners that I work for have commented that they were impressed that I came to the firm with these [oral advocacy] skills and they have hired two other associates from the CUA Vis team … the Vis team allows students to work on a case for nearly the whole academic year. This is much more like real practice.”
· From a Class of 2010 graduate, “Vis provides a law student with the academic, investigative and interpersonal skills the modern lawyer requires for success in an international economy … Vis prepares students for the reality of legal practice today by exposing them to tangible problems in contract law.”
INTERESTED IN JOINING ? The Vis Team is now accepting applications for tryouts which will be held on Thursday August 27 and Friday August 28 at CUA Law. If you are interested please email the Vis team (firstname.lastname@example.org) your resume, unofficial transcript, writing sample, and tentative class and work schedule. The tryout problem will be released for those interested on August 24, 2015.
